Website Migration Checklist: How Not to Lose Your Rankings

Short answer

The critical migration steps are: export every existing URL from Search Console before you start, map each one to its equivalent new URL, implement 301 redirects with no chains, remove noindex from staging before launch, keep the same content on your top pages, resubmit your sitemap immediately, then monitor Search Console daily for a fortnight. Ranking loss after a migration is almost always a missed redirect or a stray noindex, not the redesign itself.

Export your URLs before touching anything

Search Console's Pages report, plus a Screaming Frog crawl, plus a backlink export. A site crawl alone misses orphaned pages and retired posts that still hold links — and those are exactly the URLs that hurt when they 404.

Map every URL to an equivalent, not a hub

A redirect to the homepage or a category page passes far less value than one to a genuinely equivalent page. If no equivalent exists, consider whether the page should be rebuilt rather than redirected away.

Avoid redirect chains

Old URL to interim URL to final URL loses value at each hop and slows crawling. Every redirect should go straight to its final destination in one step. Test by hand, not by assumption.

Check the staging site isn't indexed — and the live one is

Staging sites need noindex or password protection. The failure mode that costs the most is launching with staging's noindex still in place. Check the live site's source and headers within minutes of going live.

Don't redesign and rewrite simultaneously

If rankings drop after a migration that also changed all the content, you can't tell which caused it. Keep your top-performing pages substantially intact through the move, then improve them once things have settled.

Preserve your title tags and headings on top pages

The pages already ranking are ranking for a reason. A designer's instinct to shorten every H1 to one word will cost you. Change them deliberately and one at a time, after launch.

Launch-day sequence

Deploy, spot-check ten old URLs by hand for a single 301 hop, resubmit the sitemap in Search Console, run URL Inspection on your top pages and request indexing, and confirm analytics is firing.

Monitor for a fortnight

Watch Search Console's Pages report daily for a spike in 404s — that's your missed-redirect list. Expect a one-to-two week wobble and don't react to it unless something is genuinely broken. This is how we handle every website build, and the technical checklist covers the pre-launch audit.

Check your own site

We fetch your page and check it live. Takes a few seconds, and no email is needed to see the result.
