Answer
How do I rank in the Google map pack?
Short answer
Google map pack rankings are decided by three factors: proximity (how close your business is to the searcher), prominence (how well known your business is, measured through reviews, citations, links and brand searches) and relevance (how well your profile and website match the search). You cannot change your location, so the work concentrates on prominence and relevance: a fully completed Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, steady genuine reviews, and website content that matches the services you list.
Complete the profile properly
Most profiles are half finished. Every field is a relevance signal: primary and secondary categories, individual services with descriptions, service areas, attributes, opening hours including public holidays, and photos added regularly rather than once at setup.
Fix your citations
Your business name, address and phone number need to be identical everywhere they appear. Inconsistencies — an old suite number, a disconnected landline, a slightly different trading name — create ambiguity that suppresses prominence. Duplicated listings are worse and should be merged or removed.
Build a review habit, not a review campaign
Recency matters. A business with 25 reviews spread across the last twelve months usually outperforms one with 40 reviews that all arrived two years ago. Ask at the moment of satisfaction, make it one tap, and reply to every review.
Match your website to your profile
If your profile lists a service, there should be a page on your site about that service. This alignment is one of the more reliable relevance signals and it's frequently missing.
Be realistic about radius
Proximity is weighted heavily. A business in Chatswood will struggle to appear in the map pack for searches made in Penrith regardless of how good its profile is. Extending reach beyond your immediate area is a job for organic suburb pages, not for the profile.
