Answer

SEO or Google Ads — which should I invest in first?

Short answer

If you need enquiries this month, start with Google Ads. If you need a channel that gets cheaper over time, start with SEO. Most businesses with the budget should run both: ads generate immediate enquiries and reveal which keywords convert, and that data makes the SEO programme far more accurate. If forced to choose, businesses with urgent cash flow needs should start with ads, and businesses with patience and a long customer lifetime value should start with SEO.

Speed

Google Ads can produce enquiries within days of launch. SEO typically takes three to six months to produce meaningful volume. This single difference decides the answer for most businesses under cash flow pressure.

Cost over time

Ads cost the same per click on day one and day one thousand — arguably more, as competition increases. SEO costs more up front relative to what it returns, then the cost per enquiry falls as rankings hold. Over a three-year horizon SEO is almost always the cheaper channel; over a three-month horizon it almost never is.

Durability

Turn off ads and the enquiries stop that afternoon. Stop SEO work and rankings decay slowly, usually over quarters. That makes SEO an asset and ads an expense, though an expense that can be very profitable.

Why running both is usually right

Ads give you keyword conversion data in weeks that SEO would take a year to reveal. Using that data to choose which pages to build is the highest-return way to combine the two channels.
